Frequently Asked Questions
Will the adjustment hurt?
It should not. Occasionally, it may be uncomfortable, especially if you are in an acute condition, but, usually, it does not hurt, and it is over before you know it.
What is the noise?
The noise is made by a drop in pressure within the joint, wherein, microscopic bubbles coalesce into one big bubble and pop. The gas is nitrogen.
If there was no noise, was the correction made?
Yes the correction has been made as the nerve endings within the joint have been fired. You will hear a sound only if there is gas within the joint. There are many chiropractic techniques that are effective in making corrections within the spine that do not cause sounds. For example, Activator or Drop Table Techniques, to name a few.
Is it OK to crack my own knuckles?
Maybe, if they are normal! The chiropractor only adjusts joints that are abnormal, or misaligned, and if that is your case, you need to have them looked at by a trained professional.
I ‘crack’ my neck myself; Is that OK?
No, as that can create instability in the neck. The fact that you feel like you need to ‘crack’ your neck tells us that there are areas in your neck not moving properly, areas that need to be adjusted. The areas you are ‘cracking’ may not necessarily be the problem areas; often, the causative problems are above and below the ‘sensitive’ area.
If I start going, will I have to keep going for life?
Well, it is like going to the dentist every six months, You can do preventative care, or you can go when you have a cavity. The problem is that it takes more care and money to fix a problem then it does to prevent it from happening in the first place.
Children do not need care if they haven’t lived long enough to develop problems, right?
Birth is one of the most traumatic events for the human body to endure, and the effects on the muscular-skeletal system of the newborn imposed by intrauterine constraints can be major.
Why are the pain and the problem area sometimes different?
Occasionally the problem site is not where the pain is felt. This can be due to the painful area having to overwork to compensate for another area that is the real problem causing area that may not be moving, or may not be moving properly.
